Know Your Lighting

Because it makes all the difference

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of interior design. Proper lighting can provide the right ambience to a surrounding, whether a professional or personal space. Just the right amount of colour and luminosity can work wonders. Striking the right balance between these two elements in order to create the desirable lighting is essential.

It helps filling the space in a room. Dark coloured rooms seem cramped but this can be solved with the help of lighting. Filling spaces can be further achieved if the room doesn’t have much clutter as the clutter would prevent the light to reflect off the colours on the walls. Corner lamps, track lights, etc help in achieving this purpose. This applies to home as well as office interiors.  Natural lighting is better as compared  to artificial lighting, hence spacing and positioning  of windows is important. Colours play an important role in creating the perfect lighting. Though this may sound strange, it is true. Dark colours can make the room feel the room smaller than it is. On the other hand, light, pastel shades make the room seem bigger and much spacious than it is. That is a reason why pastel shades are favoured over darker hues when it comes to getting spaces painted. Although, darker hues are good to use when it comes to using the surface as a decorative item in its own self, kind of like how a good statement necklace is enough to make a minimal outfit look impactful. Though the concept of colouring also applies to floors as well, considering how lighting can be aimed downwards. Speaking of which, direction also plays an important role in lighting. Direction of lighting can be used to fill the empty spaces in a room or to highlight a certain element. Chandeliers or similar elements add a pretty look to the room as well as help in central distribution of light from above, which works well in creating a beautiful ambience. Lights hung on the wall or ceiling help in spreading the light and are more practical. Devices like table lamps are useful in highlighting certain elements and are more useful when it comes to work spaces.

Intensity of light is another important factor. It helps in setting the mood. At the same time, the purpose of the room should be kept in mind. For example, bedrooms generally have dim lighting because bedrooms are places where people relax. On the other hand, work spaces generally have bright lighting due to the use of such spaces for office/study related purposes.

Lighting is normally of three types:

General Lighting: Also known as ambient lighting, this is the one normally seen in residential spaces like home interiors and hotel interiors. This involves up-lights and down-lights that fill spaces in order to create a warm ambiance.

Task Lighting: Generally used in offices and other work spaces/ professional interiors, Task lighting involves the use of light sources at least two-three times brighter than bulbs used in general lighting.

Accent lighting: Accent lighting helps highlighting the architectural elements of your interiors.  Halogen lights are used for accent lighting purposes due to their intensity and brilliance.
All said and done, functionality is essential to think of when it comes to choosing the right lighting for your space. Efficiency, purpose, cost, etc are all taken in account when it comes to functionality of lighting.
